Q: Who would you turn to? Building an online community…

Hi Guys,

I wondered if I could call on your help to crowd-source a supplier, software provider, social network builder…

I’d like to find a supplier to build a network to share blogs, run events, participate in discussion groups and host profiles. There will be more to it than that but interested in your thoughts.

Already in the hat:

GoSocial, Ning – probably too office the shelf and not customisable enough.

Drupal – Interested, which suppliers have a reputation for being great in this space?

Any help is of course much appreciated and hopefully you’re answers will be a resource for others who visit this page.

Regards,

Barry

An update and some context:

At the time I wrote this I was exploring the options with regards to write label social networks for what was Social Media Monday, the London networking community that I was running. The decision to re-brand to techMAP and grow its own community space came with a number of hurdles, spec and price were the main two.

The shortened version is that techMAP partnered with SocialGo who very kindly spent alot of time and resources designing and building us a fantastic community space with discussion group, profile, event management and live chat facilities at www.wearetechMAP.com – go check it out!

    Hi Barry,

I'm a director of a non profit organisation called the eLearning Network, and I recently rebuilt our site using Drupal 6. http://www.elearningnetwork.org/

I started from a blank Drupal install because we needed ecommerce integration (and there were a few other reasons around legacy data) but if I was starting from scratch I would definitely look at the recently launched Drupal Commons. http://acquia.com/products-services/drupal-commons

There's a webinar on Thursday that may be of interest. https://acquiawebinars.webex.com/mw0306lb/myweb…

PS. Always happy to help out another Barry…

    Hi Barry,

I am the founder of the O4RB Business Support and Collaboration Network (http://www.o4rb.com) which has a very powerful social network system which has many, if not all, of the functionality of Facebook/LinkedIn:

    Social Network
    Video Support
    Photo Support
    Live Chat Room
    Live Collaboration Tool
    Personal Blog
    Forum
    And much, much more.

We have already deployed this sytem in support of other netwoks and organizations like the Global Trade Network (http://www.gtnetwork.co.uk) for a very low set up fee and low a monthly per member maintenence fee. If this is of interest and you would like a live demo, please feel free to call me on 0844 556 7760.

    Hi Barry
I am working with a great outfit called http://www.ideas.org. We specialise in creating networks to suit customers needs using open source programming and what we call an 'open source' ie agile approach. Based in Great Titchfield Street London W1. Would love to hook up and tell you more if this suits?
